If you’re wondering whether it’s still worth paying someone to look after your search visibility, we get it.

You’ve probably heard that Google is dying, that AI answers everything now, and that nobody clicks on websites any more.

Some of that is true. A lot of it is overblown. Here’s what’s actually going on, and how to make sure you’re paying for the right thing.

What’s changed
Google now answers a lot of questions itself. AI Overviews (the summary box at the top of results) and AI Mode (Google’s chat-style search) mean people often get what they need without visiting a website.
The numbers are hard to ignore:
• In early 2026, 68% of US Google searches ended without a single click, according to SparkToro.
• When an AI Overview appears, the top-ranking page gets around 58% fewer clicks, according to Ahrefs. That’s nearly double the drop they measured a year earlier.
• People now also ask ChatGPT, Gemini, Perplexity and Copilot for recommendations, not just Google.
So the old game of ranking for a phrase and waiting for the clicks to roll in has changed. Anyone telling you otherwise hasn’t been paying attention.

What hasn’t changed

Google still sends far more people to websites than every AI tool put together.

SE Ranking’s 2026 research puts organic search at around 43% of all website traffic, against roughly 0.3% from AI platforms. That’s Google sending about 134 times more visitors.

The searches that matter most to most businesses are also the least affected. Branded searches, local searches and ready-to-buy searches still get clicked.

Someone typing “kitchen fitter Wakefield” wants a phone number, not an essay.

And here’s the bit people miss: AI tools build their answers from websites. Pages that are clear, trusted and well organised get quoted. Pages that aren’t get ignored. That’s still SEO. It just has more places to show up now.
(Most of this research is US data. The UK tends to follow the same direction, a little behind.)
What you’re actually paying for in 2026
Good SEO now does three jobs, not one.
1. Getting found on Google. The basics still count: a quick site, a page for each service and area you cover, a properly filled-in Google Business Profile, and reviews.
2. Getting quoted by AI. You’ll hear this called GEO (generative engine optimisation) or AIO (AI optimisation). In plain English, it means making your content easy for ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI to pick up and credit. Answer the question first. Use real facts and figures. Keep your name, address and details the same everywhere.
3. Being trusted. AI tools lean heavily on what other people say about you: reviews, press coverage, directories, LinkedIn. Your reputation away from your website now feeds your visibility on it.
Why there’s no one-size-fits-all
A plumber in Pontefract, an online jewellery shop and a specialist engineering firm need completely different things.
If you’re…
Spend on
Probably skip
A local trade or service
Google Business Profile, reviews, a page per service and town
National content campaigns
An online shop
Product pages, site speed and health, clear product info AI can read
Blog posts nobody searches for
B2B or specialist
Expert articles, case studies, being mentioned in your industry
Chasing big generic keywords
If someone’s selling you the same monthly package they sell everyone else, that’s a red flag.
How to tell if your SEO provider has kept up
Ask them these five questions:
1. Do you check whether we show up in AI Overviews, ChatGPT and Gemini, or just Google rankings?
2. What do you measure besides traffic? With fewer clicks about, enquiries matter more than visits.
3. How are you making our content easy for AI to quote?
4. What are you doing about our reviews and mentions elsewhere?
5. What won’t you do for us, and why?
Blank looks, or “we do keywords and backlinks”? Time for a second opinion.
The honest bit
SEO is slower than paid ads. It won’t double your enquiries in a month, and anyone promising that is fibbing. But switch your ads off and the leads stop that day. Good SEO keeps working while you get on with running your business.
It’s still worth paying for. You just need to pay for the right version of it.
Not sure where you stand?
That’s what our Free SEO Audit is for. We’ll look at how you show up on Google and in AI search, tell you what’s worth fixing and what isn’t, and give it to you straight. No hard sell, no jargon.
Book your Free SEO Audit
FAQ (publish at the end of the post)
Is SEO dead because of AI? No. Google still sends far more visitors to websites than all AI tools combined, and AI tools build their answers from well-optimised websites. What’s changed is where you need to show up.
What is GEO? GEO stands for generative engine optimisation. It means making your content easy for AI tools like ChatGPT, Gemini and Google’s AI Overviews to find, understand and quote. It builds on good SEO rather than replacing it.
Do I need separate SEO and GEO services? Usually not. The foundations are the same: clear content, a healthy website, consistent business details and a good reputation. A good provider covers both together.
Is SEO worth it for a small local business? Yes, often more than for anyone else. Local and “near me” searches still get clicked, and a well-run Google Business Profile with steady reviews is one of the cheapest ways to win work.
How long does SEO take to work? Most businesses see meaningful movement within three to six months, longer in busy markets. Be wary of anyone promising results in weeks.

You’ve even added your business to a few directories. So why, when someone in Yorkshire searches for exactly what you do, does your business not show up on Google?

You’re not alone. It’s one of the most common frustrations we hear from SME owners across West Yorkshire and beyond – and the good news is that in most cases, there are clear, fixable reasons why it’s happening.

Here are the most common culprits, and what you can do about each one.

1. Your website isn’t optimised for the right keywords

This is the big one. A lot of Yorkshire business websites are beautifully designed but practically invisible to Google because the copy doesn’t reflect what real customers are actually searching for.

Think about it from your customer’s perspective. If you’re a plumber in Wakefield, are you using the phrase “plumber in Wakefield” anywhere on your website? Or a “boiler repair service in West Yorkshire”? If those phrases aren’t woven naturally into your page titles, headings and body copy, Google has no clear signal that your business is relevant to those searches.

Quick fix: Make a list of 5–10 phrases your ideal customers would type into Google. Then check whether those phrases appear naturally in your homepage, service pages and page titles. If they don’t, that’s your starting point.

2. Your Google Business Profile is incomplete or unclaimed

For local searches – think “accountant near me” or “web designer in Leeds” – Google Business Profile is arguably more important than your website. It’s the listing that appears in the map pack at the top of local search results, and it’s completely free to use.

If your profile is unclaimed, incomplete or hasn’t been updated in months, you’re handing visibility straight to your competitors.

Quick fix: Search for your business on Google right now. If you see a “Claim this business” button, do it today. If you already have a profile, check that your business name, address, phone number, website, opening hours, services and categories are all accurate and up to date. Add photos and ask recent customers to leave a review.

3. Your website is too slow or not mobile-friendly

Google uses page speed and mobile experience as ranking factors. If your website takes more than three seconds to load on a mobile, Google is less likely to show it prominently – and even if it does, visitors will bounce straight off before reading a word.

This is particularly common with older WordPress sites, heavy Elementor builds and websites with uncompressed images.

Quick fix: Run your website through Google’s free PageSpeed Insights tool (pagespeed.web.dev). It’ll give you a score and a list of specific issues to fix. Common quick wins include compressing images, removing unused plugins and enabling caching.

4. You have little or no content on your site

Google rewards websites that are genuinely useful and informative. If your website is just a homepage, a services page and a contact form, there simply isn’t enough content for Google to understand what you do, who you serve and where you’re based.

Thin websites with minimal copy and no blog or resources section consistently underperform in search, especially for competitive Yorkshire markets.

Quick fix: Start adding content. That doesn’t mean writing an essay on every page – it means making sure each service page has a proper description of what you offer, who it’s for and why you’re the right choice. A blog with practical, helpful posts aimed at your ideal customers is one of the most powerful and cost-effective SEO tools available to Yorkshire SMEs.

5. Your site has no inbound links pointing to it

Google treats links from other websites as votes of confidence. The more credible, relevant websites that link back to yours, the more authority Google assigns to your site. If nobody links to you, Google has less reason to rank you above competitors who do have links.

For Yorkshire SMEs this might feel daunting, but you don’t need hundreds of links – you need a handful of quality ones.

Quick fix: Start with the basics. Make sure you’re listed on relevant directories (Yell, Checkatrade if applicable, local chamber of commerce websites). Ask suppliers, partners or complementary businesses in West Yorkshire if they’d be willing to link to your site. Consider writing a guest post for a local business blog or trade publication.

6. Your NAP details are inconsistent across the web

NAP stands for Name, Address and Phone number. Google cross-references your business details across your website, Google Business Profile and every directory listing it can find. If your business name is listed differently in different places – even something as small as “Ltd” versus “Limited” – it creates confusion and can suppress your local rankings.

Quick fix: Do a quick audit of every place your business is listed online. Make sure your name, address and phone number are identical everywhere. This is a small task with a surprisingly meaningful impact on local SEO.

7. You’re targeting keywords that are too competitive

Sometimes the problem isn’t that you’re doing nothing right – it’s that you’re trying to rank for terms that are dominated by national brands, directories or high-authority sites with years of SEO investment behind them.

If you’re a West Yorkshire HR consultant trying to rank for “HR consultant” nationally, you’re up against some very well-established competition. But “HR consultant West Yorkshire” or “HR support for SMEs in Leeds”? That’s a much more winnable space.

Quick fix: Get specific. Add location modifiers, niche descriptors and service-specific language to the keywords you’re targeting. Long-tail keywords – longer, more specific phrases – typically have lower competition and attract visitors who are much closer to making a buying decision.

8. Your website has technical issues Google can’t get past

Sometimes the problem is under the bonnet. Broken links, pages accidentally blocked from being crawled, duplicate content, missing page titles or a sitemap that hasn’t been submitted to Google Search Console can all quietly suppress your rankings without you ever knowing.

Quick fix: Set up Google Search Console (it’s free) and check the Coverage report for any crawl errors or indexing issues. Make sure your sitemap has been submitted and that your robots.txt file isn’t accidentally blocking Google from accessing key pages.

Still not sure why you’re not showing up?

Getting to the bottom of Google visibility issues can feel overwhelming, especially when you’re running a business at the same time. That’s exactly why we created our CSO Sprint – a focused, plain-English digital marketing audit that identifies exactly what’s holding your Yorkshire business back online and gives you a clear, prioritised action plan to fix it.

It’s practical, jargon-free and designed specifically for busy SME owners who need clarity fast.

Or if you’d prefer to talk it through first, book a free 30-minute discovery call and we’ll take a look at your current visibility together.

What SMEs Need to Know

AI and generative content are creating search and discovery options for your clients and customers that are not reserved solely for large organisations;
In 2025, they are accessible and essential tools for SMEs aiming to compete and grow in digital spaces. It’s a vital part of being ‘seen’ by potential buyers and collaborators whilst boosting rankings and search rates and discovery.

Harness AI for Personalisation

Use affordable AI tools to personalise website experiences, email campaigns, and social media messaging. Even basic personalisation. like first name use or recommended products based on browsing history, can boost engagement and conversions.

Streamline content creation with generative tools

Leverage AI-powered content generators to create copy including product descriptions, and campaign assets quickly. This saves time and ensures a consistent posting schedule without sacrificing quality. BUT – Always review and add your unique SME voice for authenticity. This part is vital – using AI tools for productivity is one thing, losing your unique brand voice in a saturated market is another!

Make Data Decisions, Not Guesses

AI analytics tools can identify what content is working and where your marketing budget delivers the best ROI. Use these insights to refine your ad spend, keyword targeting, and campaign timing in real-time.

Keep Customer Trust Front and Centre

Be transparent when using AI (e.g., “This FAQ is generated using AI technology”) and prioritise data privacy. Responsible use builds trust, especially for SMEs where personal relationships matter.

Upskill Your Team

Encourage employees to learn the basics of AI and generative tech. Many free and low-cost resources are available online, and this knowledge can empower your team to spot new opportunities and use tools effectively.

Key Takeaway:
In 2025, SMEs that embrace AI-driven personalisation, use generative content tools strategically, and make data-driven decisions will stand out from competitors, the key is in personalised experiences that make customers or clients feel served and taken notice of. Start small – pick one AI tool that solves an immediate challenge. Continually review, revise, and keep the human touch central to your communications.

Consistent and optimised directory listings further improve discoverability, putting your business on the digital map right where your customers are looking.

Drive Highly Targeted Traffic

Optimising for local searches brings quality leads—customers who are actively seeking your services in your area.

Branding your website effectively is essential for service-based SMEs in the UK, especially as customer expectations and digital competition soar in 2026. Here are practical design tips tailored for small businesses aiming to present a strong brand online and engage their audiences.

Prioritise Accessibility and Usability

Accessibility is now a mark of professionalism and brand quality. Use legible fonts, high-contrast colour schemes, and user-friendly navigation, making your site welcoming to every visitor. Supporting diverse users isn’t just socially responsible—it improves SEO, reputation, and compliance.

Build with Mobile-First Mindset

Mobile browsing continues to dominate, so design your website primarily for smartphones and tablets. Ensure layouts are clear and content loads quickly across devices; use large buttons and intuitive menus for easy navigation. Google ranks mobile-friendly websites higher, so prioritising mobile design enhances both user experience and search visibility.

Create Consistent, Distinctive Visual Branding

Your brand identity should be unmistakable. Use bold, clean typography, thoughtful whitespace, and a distinctive colour palette or accent colours drawn from your logo. Carry your branding throughout the site—every page, form, and button—ensuring a unified and memorable experience. Incorporate branded imagery and icons, and include your logo and contact details clearly in the header and footer.

Engage with Interactive Touches and Fast Performance

Microinteractions—such as animated feedback on forms and subtle transitions—can make your service website feel polished and personal. Fast load times are vital: optimise images, use reliable hosting, and regularly review performance to keep users engaged and reduce abandonment rates. Consider offering dark mode for added modernity and usability.

Empower User Action and Showcase Expertise

Guide visitors with clear calls-to-action and map user journeys so every page prompts meaningful next steps.
Keywords are the building blocks of SEO – and for service-based SMEs aiming to stand out in local markets, they’re mission-critical.

They bridge what potential customers are searching online with the specific solutions a business offers, making the difference between a site that attracts regular enquiries and one that disappears in the digital crowd.

What Are Keywords and Why Are They Essential?

Keywords are the words and phrases that customers type into search engines when looking for services – a hairdresser might see searches for “best hair salon Doncaster” or “wedding hair stylist near me”. For service businesses, keywords are especially relevant because customers often have a high intent: they’re not just browsing, but looking to book or enquire.

Finding Client-Driven Keywords

The best starting point is simple: brainstorm a list of services offered, specialisms, and the business’s location. Questions to consider:

What problems do clients want solved?

Online keyword research tools are invaluable for checking what real people search.

They prompt visual feedback before committing to formal designs, reducing misunderstandings and helping guide the look and feel of the final website. This early alignment makes stakeholder contributions more valuable, ensuring that branding, style, and tone meet business goals.

Spark Creativity and Unique Branding

Using moodboards is a creative exercise that ignites ideas and encourages experimentation with colour schemes, typography, imagery, and layouts. Service businesses benefit by exploring visual directions that might not surface in written briefs, helping to develop an authentic, memorable brand identity online. Moodboards can be a starting point for those without full brand guidelines, letting teams visualise and refine what works.

Streamline Collaboration and Save Time

Moodboards make collaboration easier between clients, designers, and developers, especially where technical jargon can cause confusion. By visually demonstrating concepts instead of describing them, teams reduce time spent on revisions and avoid big surprises later in the process. They enable step-by-step refinement, yielding faster, more productive workflows and helping deliver websites on schedule.

Improve User Experience Design

Service businesses need websites that are intuitive and relevant to users. Moodboards feed directly into UX design, letting teams test and adjust usability elements, visual hierarchy, and content layouts from the start. This approach leads to intuitive, consistent experiences which reflect the business’s values and services.

Adapt Easily and Build Responsive Designs

Modern moodboards—often powered by AI—are flexible and adaptive, letting teams quickly generate and modify design ideas as needs change. Responsive design essentials like grid layouts and mobile-friendly formats can be built from moodboard concepts, supporting service businesses as they move from vision to launch.

By incorporating moodboards, service businesses can design winning websites that resonate with clients and users while saving time and promoting unique branding
